The test in brief
IELTS tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You can take it on computer or on paper at a test centre.
Test types
Academic or General
Academic is for degree study abroad and professional registration. General Training is mostly for migration, work or study below degree level.
Total time
About 2 h 45 min
Listening, Reading and Writing, plus a Speaking test with an examiner.
Listening
30 minutes
40 questions in four parts. Each recording is heard once.
Reading
60 minutes
Reading passages with a range of question types.
Writing
60 minutes
Two tasks of at least 150 and 250 words. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1.
Speaking
11 to 14 min
A face to face talk with an examiner, in three parts.

Up to band 9
Each section gets a band score in half band steps, and you get an overall band.

You write regular Task 1 and Task 2 answers. Your teacher marks them and shows you exactly what to fix. - Speaking practice

Should I take IELTS Academic or General Training?
For a degree course abroad, you almost always need IELTS Academic. General Training is mostly for migration, work, or study below degree level. Always check what your university or visa office asks for.
Which IELTS section is the most difficult?
It is different for every student. Many find Writing and Speaking hardest, because they need accurate English, clear organisation and answers that stay on the question. A diagnostic test shows where you need the most help.
How can I improve my IELTS Writing score?
Answer the task fully, organise your ideas in a clear order, develop relevant points and use accurate vocabulary and grammar. Regular practice with detailed feedback is the key to steady improvement.
Should I take IELTS on computer or on paper?
The questions and timing are the same. Computer results come faster, usually in 1 to 2 days in India, and only the computer test allows One Skill Retake. Choose the one you feel more comfortable with.
Can I retake only one section?
Yes, if you took IELTS on computer. One Skill Retake lets you retake one section within 60 days of your test. Fees depend on the test provider, so check when you book.
How long is an IELTS score valid?
IELTS recommends that a score is accepted for up to two years after the test. Each university and visa office sets its own rule, so check with them.
Do you guarantee a band score?
No. No honest coach can promise a band. We promise good teaching, regular practice and honest feedback on where you stand.
