Shorter degrees

Most bachelor’s degrees take 3 years. Engineering honours degrees take 4, and an honours year can follow a 3 year degree.

Two intakes a year

Most universities start in February and July, and UNSW runs three terms. A student who misses one intake can plan for the next.

Work during study

Students can work up to 48 hours a fortnight during study periods and without a limit in scheduled breaks.

Longer work visa for Indians

Under the Australia India trade agreement, Indian graduates can stay up to 2 years after a bachelor’s, 3 years after a master’s and 4 after a PhD, with unlimited work rights.

A large Indian community

More than 88,000 Indian students held student visas in Australia at the end of 2025.

Things to weigh honestly

  • Higher visa fees. The student visa costs AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026, and the graduate work visa AUD 5,750.
  • High living costs. The visa asks for at least AUD 29,710 a year for living costs, and Sydney can cost more than AUD 40,820.
  • Student numbers are managed. The government plans 295,000 new international students in 2026 and 2027. Visas for busy universities may take longer.
  • Genuine Student test and family rules. Visa applicants must explain their study choice. From 2 October 2026, most student visa holders cannot include a partner or children.

Admission requirements

Australian entry requirements for CBSE and ISC students

Mainly Class 12 marks in the right subjects and an English score. Essays and interviews are rare for most courses.

Class 12 marks

Usually the best four subjects, read the university’s own way.

Melbourne and Monash use the best four subjects. Sydney and UTS turn CBSE grades into points out of 20. UNSW uses English or Hindi plus the best four other subjects for CBSE. Some state boards are accepted, often with higher marks.

Subject prerequisites

Mathematics for commerce, engineering and science.

Melbourne Commerce needs English and Mathematics, and Science needs Mathematics plus a science. Engineering usually needs Mathematics with Physics or Chemistry. Many courses assume advanced Mathematics.

English

Class 12 English often counts.

Melbourne accepts a pass in CBSE or ISC English. UNSW accepts CBSE English Core at C1 (B2 for business) or ISC English at 70% (80% for business). Otherwise most universities ask for IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0. The visa minimum is IELTS 6.0.

Direct entry or foundation

Foundation and diploma routes for lower marks or Class 11 applicants.

Trinity College Foundation Studies leads to Melbourne and accepts Class 11 with 60% to 65%, or a Fast Track with Class 12 CBSE at 75%. UNSW College offers Foundation Studies and diplomas that lead to second year. Macquarie offers a foundation route from 50% to 59% in Class 12.

SAT

Not usually required.

Australian universities publish Class 12 scores for Indian students. A SAT score can still help a student who is also applying to the USA.

How to apply

Directly to each university.

Apply online to each university with final Class 12 marks, or with Class 11 and predicted marks for a conditional offer. After you accept and pay the deposit (at least AUD 17,000 at Melbourne), the university issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for the visa.
